Spring Stakes 2022 Preview
Track: Good Weather: Sunny
Thirteen runners have accepted for the $200,000 Spring Stakes and there have been no early scratchings.
There have been some nice winners of this race in the past, and one of these lucky three-year-olds will enter the records as a winner of this prestigious race. Saveadateforme ($3.00) has opened the early favourite following a demolition of his opposition at Goulburn by 3.75 lengths, albeit only in Class 2 company. Rediener ($4.80) leads the charge for the Chris Waller army of four who is returning to New South Wales following a stint down in Melbourne.
The next three in the market are Chris Waller’s other three runners in Kazalark ($5.50), Robusto ($6.00) , and Basquiat ($10.00).
Spring Stakes Runner by Runner
1. Basquiat (7)
He has had a mixed preparation thus far finishing no closer than 3.8 lengths in all five starts. His last start effort in the Callander Presnall was just okay but he will nee a much bigger effort to trouble some of these.
2. Robusto (12)
He was a solid winner last time out in a benchmark 64 on Cup day, winning by just over half a length after being restrained back and making a late charge at them. He lost a plate in the run which gives even more merit to the win. He gets James McDonald back aboard and despite drawing wide, I think he will get his chance on this even track.
3. Savedateforme (10)
Going for three wins in a row following his 3.75 length win at Goulburn in a Class 2. This is much harder but much like a lot of his rivals, he has plenty of upside and looks to have some talent. He is a deserved favourite based on his previous run but could get into an unbackable price.
4. Rediener (11)
This bloke ran a solid third at Caulfield behind Zoe’s Promise in a benchmark 70, and she has since won a Group 2. He then went to Flemington in the Carbine Club where he was given no hope sitting wide for most of the race. He did well to still finish five lengths off the winner. Be interesting to see what they will do from the gate but I expect him to be thereabouts.
5. Token Capitalist (4)
Finished seven lengths off Golden Mile in the Callander Presnall. Looks to have some talent but this is his first preparation and I think he still has a bit to go before being the finished product.
6. Kazalark (1)
Only had two starts in his career thus far with the latest being a 1.1-length win at Hawkesbury over 1500m. He has drawn nicely here, and has plenty of upside and maps to get a nice run. It’s just a matter of whether this is too soon for him.
7. Kandos Cosmos (13)
Placed in a midweek 1400m maiden at Warwick Farm. Prefer others.
8. Pierossa (2)
Last start winner at Gosford over the mile. Place chance at best.
9. So You Battle (9)
Looks to have her work cut out for her.
10. Marillier (3)
Coming from a Class 1 win at Dubbo which rated well. Place chance.
11. Starliner (6)
Looks too hard for her.
12. Miss Faberge (8)
She has really fallen from grace since last preparation and enters this race as a maiden. Prefer others.
13. Talento (5)
Can’t have.
