Best bet – Race 7 #11 So Clever
Only tasted defeat once from three starts and on that occasion he deservedly found his way into our black book. It was a nightmare watch from the outset, missing the start when he was expected to take the lead on his own. From there he raced wide and then showed great audacity to almost reel in the eventual winner Luskin Hero. He can atone here with Jim Byrne aboard, and from the perfect barrier (four) should either lead or sit just off them in a race with very little speed.
Next best – Race 9 #11 Wapiti
Liked this 5yo’s trial and he can show up fresh. From barrier three, Jimmy Orman should afford this underrated galloper a beautiful run just behind the speed. If the gaps appear late, I’m confident he’ll be jumping out of the ground at the leaders as they hit the line. He’s another with a very good record at Doomben.
Best each way – Race 8 #2 Freddie Fox Trot
Way over the odds in what looks an even Open Handicap. He has gone up $34 but I wouldn’t be surprised if we get even better closer to race start. He trialled well two weeks ago and while he might take a bit longer to find his best as an older horse, I’m sure he’s going to be competitive. There’s a lot of speed here, and I’m hoping he can sit midfield and sprint late. He loves Doomben and has run many strong races in better company at this track.
