Ruinart (Newcastle Race 5 No. 6)
Loved the trials of this Hallowed Crown mare following another campaign or getting close but not getting the chocolates. She placed three times in all three starts last preparation behind Po Kare Kare at Canterbury, Kouklara at Newcastle, and Dalchini at Newcastle. Dalchini has since run in four Group 3’s, placing in the Hawkesbury Guineas. In all three runs last preparation she had zero luck and finished in the top three in each race for the final 200m sectionals, which just shows you that she should have broken her maiden by now with even luck. She is drawn well here, gets Hugh Bowman aboard and resumes against her own sex. She is the one to beat.

Stroke of Luck (Newcastle Race 6 No.13)
This does look like a race in two between Magic and our pick, who is a first starter for the John O’Shea stable. The son of Fastnet Rock has two trials earlier in the year before going to the paddock and has since trialled twice in preparation for this. He was wound up a touch in his latest trial which was over 1045m, so I think the 1300m on the big Newcastle track is an ideal starting point. He is drawn well, gets Bowman aboard, and maps to get a better run than his main rival. Hoping for a big enough break to get us the win and give Bowman/O’Shea race-to-race wins.
