Gravina (Newcastle Race 7 No.12)
He merely got too far back last start to be a factor but still come home well, running the quickest final 400m and 200m of the races (13th and 11th for the meeting respectively). There does look to be a little bit of pace here so if Kerrin McEvoy can get him into a nice spot midfield or better, I think he is a massive chance to repeat his first-up performance. The conditions suit, the step back up to 1200m is good, and being third-up will mean he is cherry-ripe. I am expecting a big run.

Next Each Way
Never Been Kissed (Newcastle Race 6 No.3) / Hinged (Newcastle Race 6 No.2)
I thought Never Been Kissed was mighty tough last start when racing keenly in a race where she just wasn’t suited to the sit and sprint. She has drawn ideally in a race with little speed, so she should be able to get the race run the way she wants and the step up to 2000m is ideal. She will have the Waterhouse/Bott polish, so her fitness won’t be an issue whatsoever and on a day that might be hard to make a lot of ground, if she can get them off the bit early, she should be able to grind them into the ground. With the change of track, I had to add Hinged here from the decent draw. Gets to drop back 150m which will help any with the query of her stepping up and should get into a nice spot from the 1850m starting point.

Other Bets
Character (Newcastle Race 2 No.3) / Sword Point (Newcastle Race 2 No.5)
Character wasn’t overly suited to the sit and sprint home last start behind Mr Mozart in the Phar Lap Stakes. The step up to 2000m looks ideal and he does have a history of running over a trip, running a big race in the Geelong Classic before running a credible eighth in the Victoria Derby, to which he was found to be lame afterward. He is third-up, maps well, and looks to handle the conditions. Sword Point is progressive and the move to Newcastle suits him down to the ground. It brings him further into this than what I had him at Rosehill.
Suggested Bet: 0.8 unit @ BOB / 1 unit @ BOB
Nimalee (Newcastle Race 3 No.3) / Mirra Vision (Newcastle Race 3 No.8)
Going a bit wider in this one as I think there is some value around these two. Nimalee was impressive first-up in the Newcastle Newmarket, running some terrific sectional on the way to her second placing. She goes well second-up, doesn’t mind the wet, and loves these track conditions. There is a bit of speed around but she should be able to settle fifth or so and get a nice run throughout. Providing she is within range, she will give us a show. Mirra Vision is a silly price, especially after her second placing to Lighthouse in the Coolmore Classic. She drops back to Group 2 level, drawn ideally to camp just off the leaders and she will relish the conditions.
Suggested Bet: 0.5 unit @ BOB / 0.3 unit @ BOB
Imaging (Newcastle Race 4 No.5) / Our Playboy (Newcastle Race 4 No.11)
Despite the Waller camp not being in very good form, I reckon this bloke can make a decent return. Imaging comes to hand quite quickly and I loved his trial leading into this. The conditions won’t worry him and I think the draw is good enough for him to sit a touch better than midfield. I think he is going to start over the odds here. Our Playboy ran well first-up and generally improves well second-up. They have sent him down to find the wet track which they will definitely get and he gets the benefit of a good draw and a slight step up in distance. I expect him to be in the finish.
